Abstract

The results of an empirical study of the conditions for the academic success of cadets of different sex, who are trained at the graduate course of Kharkov National University of Internal Affairs, have been analyzed. It has been stated that cadets are better at studying, who are distinguished by certain personal characteristics that contribute to this process. These features are gender specific, that is, different in boys and girls.

Symptomatic complexes of personality characteristics that distinguish cadets with different levels of academic success have been singled out. It has been found out that the high level of academic success of female cadets is associated with the demonstration of higher personal traits and motivation, with sharpening of peaks in personal profiles, which indicates with a high level of determinism of academic success with personal characteristics, the role of strongly pronounced individuality of girls. The most “optimal” personal characteristics in the group of young cadets, are inherent in persons with a sufficient level of academic success, and the polar subgroups of low and high success are characterized by a number of unfavorable psychological qualities from the point of view of the psychic profile of police activity.

Discriminant equations of personal and socio-psychological predictors, which explain the forecast of the academic success of cadets of different sexes, have been constructed. The general precondition for academic success for cadets is “maturity of behavior”, readiness and ability to contain emotional and behavioral manifestations (patience, perseverance and self-control). Besides, for girls it is an orientation to communication and interaction while preserving and defending personal boundaries, and for young men – the readiness and ability to position oneself as a person, to emphasize one’s own individuality in views and behavior.
