Abstract

Based on the results of empirical and theoretical research, this article attempts to understand the nature, reveal the essence, and clarify the scientific content of integrity in the field of criminology. It provides an expert assessment of the degree of development and relevance of this issue, focusing on the peculiarities of its research methodology. Three scientific areas are identified within which the main scientific discourse on the problem of integrity takes place. Ukrainian and foreign scientists whose scientific work contributes to the deepening of knowledge about integrity in science in general and in criminology in particular are listed. The general scientific methodology for understanding integrity in criminological science is clarified. The close connection between integrity and systematicity, as well as between comprehensive and systematic approaches, particularly in the field of crime prevention, is substantiated. The author's definition of the concept of “integrity” is proposed and its essential features are identified. Relevant arguments are presented in favour of the idea that the cognition of integrity must be carried out using the example and taking into account a special systemic object – the criminological system of Ukraine. A number of complexes (levels) of such a system are identified. It is stated that the core of the criminological system is formed by the complexes of criminological theory, legislation and activity. The conclusion is made that integrity should not be limited to its classical-archaic interpretation, which boils down to the interdisciplinary (intersectoral) manifestation of integrity in connection with criminological theory and practice with other fields of knowledge related to the problem of crime prevention. The modern approach also involves an internal understanding of integrity within the criminological system of Ukraine. The need for a dual (classical and modern) interpretation of this phenomenon is emphasised. Its external and internal manifestations are characterised using the example of criminological theory, legislation and practice.
